  • 1/4 cucumber cut into chunks, plus a few thinly sliced for garnish
  • 6 mint leaves plus more for garnish
  • 1/4 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 Ounce fresh lemon juice
  • Chilled Club soda to cap

Gin, Triple Sec, Cucumber and Mint Cocktail

I was asked to review the cocktail book ‘Handcrafted Cocktails – The Mixologist’s Guide to Classic Drinks for Morning, Noon and Night‘ by Molly Wellmann. I’m always eager to be inspired and learn more about the art of crafting cocktails so I took the bait and I’m glad I did.

It’s a small book that is just packed with information and great recipes, well…I’m assuming great recipes if the first drink I spied that took my fancy is any measure. The book opened to this recipe for a Gin, Triple Sec, Cucumber and Mint Cocktail called The Kitty Burke and I was sold.

It looked so refreshing on what was a hot day in Denver and I spied in the middle of the page a reference to the St. Louis Cardinals and I was done. I’m from St. Louis and no matter how long I’ve been gone or how far away I may be I will forever be a Cardinals fan.

This drink was getting made it did not hurt that it included Gin, Triple Sec, Cucumber and Mint sounded fantastic.

Molly resides in Cincinnati and brings a world of experience to this endeavor. She is the co-owner of multiple bars in Cincinnati and was voted best mixologist/bartender in the city for three consecutive years this girl has chops!

The book includes chapters that provide basics for Bartending Tools and Techniques and another that discusses Spirits and Handcrafted Mixers but the best part is how she separates the remaining chapters of the book into sections for illuminating cocktails basically on the consideration of what time of the day they are best suited for. How convenient!

In Drinks for the Morning there are hangover cures, pretty pink concoctions and more meant for a breakfast or brunch occasion. Additional chapters follow with Drinks for the Afternoon, Happy Hour Drinks, Drinks with Dinner and After Dinner Drinks.

The Kitty Burke is in Chapter 4: Drinks for the Afternoon. Don’t you love that…no longer resigned to having to wait until 5pm! The ingredients all contribute to such a light and totally refreshing beverage…some gin, orange flower water, mint and cucumber…makes you thirsty just thinking about it, huh?

I also noticed some familiar names in this chapter like the Mint Julep and Pisco Punch but I’m more excited about those I have yet to discover the Koala cocktail might have to be tried soon I’m absolutely enthralled about a cocktail that uses eucalyptus simple syrup!

Some of the cocktails have a story behind them and the Kitty Burke is one of those. Kitty was a Cincinnati burlesque dancer in the 1930’s who loved the Red Stockings that played at Crosley Field where she loved to heckle the batters.

One night she became agitated enough with her team that she walked over to the on deck batter and took the bat from him to show him how to hit. GO KITTY!!

The Cardinals pitcher threw her a pitch and and the rest is history. She hit the ball (even though it didn’t count, of course) but it did put her in the history books. The Reds gave her a uniform she even used in her act.

I love the authors tone, I can not deny, indicating she made this cocktail with a little orange blossom water to give it a feminine touch but that it’s the perfect drink for bad-ass women to drink while watching and playing baseball better than men. Wish I had been there with Kitty…I can hear myself now, ‘You GO Girl!!’

I’ve got so many cocktails I want to make and guess what? One of my readers will be given this same book to make them too! My cucumber mint cooler recipe

I think I did a damn good job too! My cucumber mint cooler recipe is sparkling water beefed up. I sliced English cucumbers (fewer seeds than your average cucumbers) and tossed them into a glass along with handfuls of fresh mint and a few lemon slices. I topped this off with San Pellegrino Lemonata, a little ice, and then I guzzled it down. I think I actually did one of those out loud “ah’s” people do in soda commercial. I probably had the same admiring grin too. Then I opened up another can to repeat the recipe.

You could use only use lemons and add unflavored sparkling water if you wish. You’ll notice that my recipe really doesn’t give much in the way of measurements. You have to go with the gut on this cooler recipe. Add what you like, take away what you don’t. It’s all good it’s all refreshing!


Make the homemade sour mix

  1. Combine the honey and the juices together in a closeable container and shake the mess out of it.
  2. The honey will be thick so make sure you get it all combined.
  3. Store this in the fridge for up to 2 days.

To make the Cucumber Mint Gin Cooler

  1. Muddle the cucumber slices and mint in the glass.
  2. Add ice to the glass.
  3. In a separate shaker or container, combine the gin, sour mix, and sparkling water.
  4. Stir to combine.
  5. Pour over the ice and stir or mix by pouring into another glass and then back into the first one.
  6. Garnish with cucumber slices and mint sprigs.

Lemon, Mint & Cucumber Gin Cooler

I’m rather partial to a cocktail!

Especially since I don’t like table wine or beer, which seem to be the default alcoholic choices to drink with food when eating out in a restaurant. I usually end up choosing a soft drink – a fizzy drink, fruit juice, maybe a milkshake or a lassi, or just plain old tap water. But show me a really good cocktail menu and you have my attention, especially if it’s not one of those slave-to-fashion affairs in which virtually every cocktail features trendy home made bitters. Uugh! As someone with a sweet-tooth, I’m not a fan of trendy bitter cocktails!

When it comes to drinking at home, it’s a simple matter to raid not only the (groaning) alcohol cupboard but the fridge and pantry too, all the better to shake up something special.

Most Gin Cooler recipes combine gin with either cucumber or elderflower, plus lemon or lime, and sometimes a little soda water to create a tall rather than short drink.

Usually the cucumber is sliced or diced and added whole, but for my Lemon, Mint & Cucumber Gin Cooler I’ve juiced the cucumber with some mint and combined the glorious green liquid with gin, lemon zest, lemon juice and a touch of sugar. Including the cucumber skin gives a much deeper green colour and a stronger flavour, but of course you can peel the cucumber first if you’d like something a little more subtle.

Because I’m a child at heart and love a good froth moustache, I’ve added an egg white to make a thick layer of froth but you can miss this out if you’re not so keen, or if you make this for anyone who can’t consume raw eggs. Likewise, if you prefer a tall drink, omit the egg white and instead add up to 100 ml of soda water shake all the ingredients except for the soda water, pour the mix into a tall glass and then top up with the soda water.

For the lemon zest, make sure you use one of the new generation of super-sharp fine-gauge graters such as the Deiss Pro Citrus Lemon Zester & Cheese Grater. These allow you to zest only the very top layer of the citrus peel which is full of essential oils and flavour, leaving behind the bitter white pith.


Cucumber Cooler

Happy Friday! I have a secret to tell you about this Cucumber Cooler cocktail recipe. There isn’t one bit of cucumber in this drink, aside from its garnish! So what’s with the name? It’s refreshing, cool and crisp as a cucumber but honestly I’m still trying to figure that part out for myself.

I considered muddling a bit of cucumber in, to justify the name, but after one refreshing sip I left well enough alone. This drink is all sorts of delicious!

The Cucumber Cooler is a drink worthy of a seersucker suit, a lazy day spent on a porch swing, and a good ol’ southern drawl. Yes, I can almost feel the humidity now…

Have a relaxing weekend and sip on one of these why don’t you!

Cucumber Cooler– adapted slightly from Hendrick’s

1½ parts Gin (I prefer Bombay Sapphire or Hendrick’s)
¾ part St. Germain
¾ part fresh lime juice
¼ part simple syrup
soda water
5 mint leaves

1. Muddle mint in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice.
2. Add Gin, St. Germain, lime juice, simple syrup, and shake well.
3. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and top with soda water. Garnish with cucumber.

NOTE: A very Happy Birthday to my Dad who makes the best Gin & Tonic ever tasted.


Gin Cucumber Cooler

Ingredients

  • 1 shot gin (I prefer Hendricks for this cocktail)
  • 1/2 shot St. Germain liqueur
  • 1/2 shot fresh cucumber juice* (you’ll need a cucumber whether you make the juice or just muddle it)
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1/4 – 1/2 shot mint (or basil) simple syrup* (adjust amount to your sweetness preference)
  • club soda (about 1-2 shots, depending on how large of a glass you are using)

Instructions

  1. Make the cucumber juice: Peel a cucumber (I used an English cucumber) and cut it up into chunks. Put in blender and blend until smooth. You can use the puree if you like, but I prefer to strain it through a fine mesh strainer to remove the pulp and just use the juice.
  2. Make the mint or basil simple syrup: Combine equal parts sugar and water (I typically use 1 cup), bring to a boil, reduce and add a big handful of mint or basil. Simmer a couple minutes, remove from heat and let cool. Once cooled, strain out the mint or basil and store simple syrup in refrigerator.
  3. Make the cocktail: Combine gin, St. Germain, cucumber juice, lime juice and simple syrup in cocktail shaker with a bit of ice. Shake well and strain over tall rocks glass filled with ice. Top with club soda

Notes

*You can substitute the cucumber juice with a few pieces of cucumber to muddle, but I recommend making the juice!
*This is equally delicious with mint or basil so get wild and give them both a try and see which you prefer!


Cucumber Gin Cooler and Garden Variety Cocktail Recipes

Whenever I slice cucumbers I always think how fresh they smell. Even in the middle of winter you can get a hint of summer freshness when cutting up a cuke. They’re great on their own and in salads, of course, but can also lend a fresh hint of flavor to cocktails. Add some sweet, juicy watermelon, the quintessential summer fruit, and up the refreshment factor even more.

The folks at Minnesota’s own Prairie Organic Spirits take it a step further and feature a cucumber-flavored organic vodka in their lineup, which also includes certified organic vodka and organic gin.

The spirits are made from single vintage organic corn that is grown on a handful of family-owned and operated farms. Cucumber Gin Cooler

1.5 oz. Prairie Organic Gin
4 cucumber slices
¼ lime, sliced
4 oz. tonic water
6 mint leaves
1 tbsp. sugar

Add mint, lime, gin and sugar to a shaker and muddle. Add cucumber slices to the shaker and shake vigorously. Pour mixture over glass filled with ice, top with tonic water and stir.

Garden Variety

2 oz. Prairie Cucumber-Flavored Organic Vodka
2 1-inch cubes of seedless watermelon
1 diced lime (bitter ends removed)
1 oz. organic agave nectar
Salt
1 cucumber slice

Mix all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake, then serve in a lowball glass over ice with a lightly salted rim. Garnish with a slice of cucumber.
